RoverPC intros Pro G7 smartphone
Monday, December 1, 2008 @ 4:45pm

Russia's RoverPC recently introduced a business-oriented smartphone, the Pro G7. The handset includes a 2.8-inch, 640x480 touchscreen complemented by a scroll wheel. Processing power comes from a 624MHz CPU and 128MB of RAM that run Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional particularly smoothly. The quad-band GSM device can connect to the Internet over 3G data networks or hotspots thanks to its built-in Wi-Fi module. Built-in memory is fixed at 256MB but expandable via a microSDHC card slot. A pair of cameras, including a 3-megapixel shooter on the backside and a 0.3-megapixel cam for chatting, is built in.

RoverPC will reportedly offer options for the handset, including a position sensor that can rotate the screen into a landscape orientation to make watching videos and surfing the web. Curiously, an HTML browser, email client, organizer and PC syncing are listed as options as well, along with an FM radio tuner and GPS capabilities. Bluetooth 2.0 support will allow wireless headsets to communicate with the G7.

The GPS function, combined with a service that downloads locations of traffic cameras in Russia, will alert users when they are approaching the locations. The same feature can warn of traffic jams and redirect drivers as necessary.

Otherwise, the handset has a speakerphone and support polyphonic ringtones, in addition to acting as an MP3 player. The handset is due to ship in December in Russia, with an equivalent price tag of about $616. [via PhoneMag]

    Sure wished the iPhone

had two cameras. It would be perfect for social networking. I really can't understand why Apple decided to leave that feature out being that so many iPhones will be in use and all the their notebook computers come with webcams. I guess they'll add it into the next model to sell more iPhones.

$616 without options!? such as web-browser, email, GPS!! Something doesn't seem right.

The big question is, will it run Android?

    G7 or G1

Clearly trying to ride the G1 wave. The look is similar (many phones are, though), but the name looks similar given how close 1 and 7 can look.

Can't blame them for trying to get some extra sales by riding the G1's hype in a market that the G1 doesn't sell in.
