purplera1n jailbreaks iPhone 3GS
Friday, July 3, 2009 @ 9:15am

The first jailbreaking tool for the iPhone 3GS has been released, claims coder George Hotz. Called purplera1n, the hack is described as in beta but launched though an installer file, thus making it friendly to the general public. Due to potential problems, Hotz suggests users backup any important iPhone data before attempting to crack the phone's security.

The tool is currently Windows-only, excluding Windows 7, and additionally requires iTunes 8.2 and iPhone 3.0. A Mac version of the software is said to be "coming soon." Hotz also notes that iPhone 3.1 is already in Apple beta testing, and will likely demand a revised version of purplera1n. No carrier unlock is yet available for the 3GS.

    Mac version soon?

    258528

If they release the Mac version, I may find myself deciding to buy a 3gs.

I won't own an iPhone I can't jailbreak, it's just WAY too useful to have a handheld unix box that's also a great phone - but my 3g is a bit slow.

And an non-jailbroken iPhone might as well not be running unix at all.

He's a jerk. This is going to make it possible for Apple to close the hole now.
