Amazon pushes Cloud Player app to Roku, Samsung Smart TVs
Thursday, December 13, 2012 @ 1:25pm

Amazon has released versions of its Cloud Player for Roku set-top boxes and Samsung Smart TVs. The update comes at the same time as apps for Amazon Instant Video became available to download in Apple's App Store for the iPhone and iPod touch, four months after it became available on the iPad.

Cloud Player allows users to stream MP3s bought from the retailer and stored on Amazon's cloud storage. Both the Roku and Samsung devices will be able to play music from the online storage locker, including songs uploaded to it from other services, but the app will not allow for song uploads, likely due to the lack of on-device storage. Amazon Instant Video for the iPhone and iPod touch, just as the iPad version, lets Amazon Prime members stream over 30,000 titles at no charge, and offers non-members access to 140,000 titles to buy or rent. Though in-app purchases are not enabled, requiring users to buy it through Amazon's online store directly instead of through the app, it will provide a list of already-owned titles in "Your Video Library," as well as the "Your Watchlist" future viewing list compilation feature.
