Samsung chief strategy officer admits being an Apple user
Thursday, December 13, 2012 @ 6:15am

Samsung’s Silicon Valley-based chief strategy officer has admitted in an interview with Trendsetter that he uses an Apple Mac, iPad and iPhone when at home. Young Sohn, who joined Samsung in August after a long stint with Intel, was highlighting what he called Apple’s ‘sticky’ ecosystem, which he believed gives the Cupertino giant its competive advantage over Samsung. Samsung by comparison, remains ‘device-centric,’ but he said it would continue towards developing a more connected ecosystem.

“OK, so think about Apple compared to Samsung. I use a Mac, actually, at home,” said Sohn. “I’ve always used Mac, an iPhone, and an iPad. I also have the Galaxy. So I’m a great example,” Sohn said explaining how Apple has been successful at creating an ecosystem that helps to retain its users over the long run. In response, Sohn said that Samsung would be focusing efforts on “cloud technologies, big-data technologies, mobile-ecosystem technologies, and enterprise infrastructure.” For Samsung to be able to compete with Apple on an equal footing beyond the hardware itself, “These are all very critical things we’ll be looking at,” Sohn contended. To do this, Sohn said that he and his 2,000 person team, housed in two new R&D buildings in the Valley, will investing money in attracting entrepreneurs and partners to help build and support the Samsung ecosystem. When, and if he achieves his goal, Sohn may then be in a position to start using Samsung products at home as well as at the office.
