THX launches tune-up calibration app for iPhone, iPad

| Movie standards firm THX has released THX tune-up, its first iOS title. The app is meant to help calibrate TVs, speakers, and projectors, using an interactive configuration process. When checking video for instance, tune-up can use a device's camera to check for accurate color and tint. The software also makes suggestions for adjusting brightness, contrast, and aspect ratios.
For audio the app guides people through making sure connections are wired properly, in phase, and sending output to the right speakers. Finished configurations can be demonstrated through movie trailers or THX's famous Deep Note, here formatted for 5.1-channel surround sound.
THX tune-up is currently free, but after the first week will cost $2. The app requires at least an iPhone 4, iPad 2, or fourth-generation iPod touch. Users must also have an AV adapter cable or Apple TV, since many of the app's functions aren't useful without direct output to a home theater system.
