Facebook buys mobile developer tool provider Parse
Thursday, April 25, 2013 @ 9:14pm

According to Facebook, the company has just acquired cloud coding company Parse, giving it a platform for back-end tools for mobile developers. Facebook calls the size of the deal "not material" to the acquisition, but reports place the deal between $80 and $95 million. Parse ownership claims that it had many corporate suitors, but chose Facebook because the social network fit the ethos of the startup better than the other companies involved.

Parse offers tools to developers that assist with data cloud storage, push notifications, code execution, and login services. The company has hooks in over 60,000 apps, mostly for the iOS. Facebook claims it will keep Parse's "freemium" model for money-making, and if the process continues, the focus will be on generating profit from the top 10 percent of its users. Parse's existing terms for app developers allow for up to one million data pushes or requests per month, with a limit of 20 events per second across all users. The next tier is $199 a month for 15 million requests a month, allowing five million pushes, and a event limit of 40 per second. Other rates are available by request. "Since 2007, the Facebook platform has been about being an identity mechanism with sharing. But over the course of the last six months, we’ve been thinking about how we can help applications get discovered and how they can be monetized" said Facebook Director of Product Management Doug Purdy, discussing the acquisition. The transaction is subject to normal regulatory review. Parse expects the transaction to close shortly.
