Morgan Stanley: Multiple iPhones starting production in June/July
Wednesday, May 8, 2013 @ 9:31am

Multiple new iPhones should begin production in June or July, says Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty in a new memo. The claim is based on meetings with suppliers in Hong Kong and Taiwan. She predicts that the new phones will launch in September; production starting in the next couple of months would be consistent with recent rumors about Sharp.

No new information on a widely-rumored low-cost iPhone has been mentioned. Huberty contends, however, that the device could sell particularly well in China, even if it cost more than a "sweet spot" of $160. Commenting on iPhone 5 sales, the analyst's sources tell her that shipments are now in line with forecasts. In past months, reports have said that Apple was scaling back iPhone 5 production due to lower-than-anticipated demand. "After a slow start, iPhone 5, is now on track to meet carrier volume expectations and iPhone 4 price cuts could stimulate incremental demand near-term," Huberty writes. "Carriers see the opportunity for Apple to expand market coverage with 5-inch and lower-priced iPhones over time. TD-LTE licenses, and related phone launches, are expected by year-end."
