Digg Google Reader clone to be part of existing Digg iOS app
Friday, May 24, 2013 @ 8:41am

Digg will not be releasing a separate app for its Google Reader replacement, instead rolling it into the existing Digg app for iOS. Development of the Digg Reader, which would offer much of Google Reader's functionality along with an API, has also shifted onto production servers, and is said to be close to its goal of launching by the end of June.

CEO Andrew McLaughlin, speaking at Internet Week New York to The Next Web, advised the reader will "have one download, which is Digg, and the current Digg will have added onto it reader capabilities." The company is aiming to make "something that's very clean, very simple, and very fast," with McLaughlin calling it a "production tool" with the option to sort and rank content in various ways, including by popularity. While Digg is confirming its iOS app as having the upcoming Reader capabilities, and is the company's main focus alongside the web version, it is still continuing to work on an Android version, though did not reveal when it would be available. The construction of the Digg RSS reader started after Google revealed it was to shut down Google Reader, alongside a number of other core services. Existing RSS reader applications have benefited from the sudden jump in user numbers shortly after it was announced by the search company, and are likely to spike again when it turns off the service on July 1st.
