Windows RT casualties grow, Lenovo drops IdeaPad Yoga 11 Win RT
Thursday, July 18, 2013 @ 8:26am

The list of vendors opting out of Windows RT has added one more major manufacturer with news that Lenovo has dropped its IdeaPad Yoga 11. Windows RT has been plagued by a poor user reception with manufacturers either scrapping plans for Windows RT devices, slashing prices on models , or even cutting devices from their lineup altogether. Although Microsoft includes Office apps including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for free on Window RT devices, its inability to run legacy applications in desktop model, the conspicuous absence of Outlook and lack of Windows 8 ‘modern’ apps has dampened sales.

Microsoft recently slashed the price of its own Surface with Windows RT by $150 across all models in an effort to clear inventory and increase its appeal when compared with the iPad. The Redmond-based company has recently been running a series of ads comparing the Surface to the iPad, claiming that users can do more on a Surface. The new pricing structure of the Surface RT has it sitting below Apple’s two-year old iPad 2 in pricing, making it a much attractive value proposition than it has been in the past. However, the Surface RT is hampered by the rapidly ageing Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, which along with its other shortcomings may still give users pause despite its more attractive pricing. Further, Microsoft hasn’t reduced the pricing of its keyboard cover accessories in line with the price reductions to the Surface hardware (although non-bundled models will still work with Bluetooth or USB wired keyboards). Microsoft is also readying Windows 8.1 for Windows RT as well, that along with interface enhancements will also finally bring Outlook RT to Windows RT users at no additional cost.
