Reuters sources back existence of gold option for iPhone 5S
Thursday, August 22, 2013 @ 10:45am

Apple is indeed adding a gold/champagne-colored iPhone to its lineup, sources in the Taiwanese supply chain tell Reuters. The newswire agency doesn't have any further details, but suggests that the option may not be as popular in China and India as has otherwise been suggested. Several people were interviewed in both countries; in China, people described the idea of a gold iPhone as "a little tacky," "for guys," or something that "might be very ugly."

Gold-plated electronics are sold in China and India, but many younger Chinese reportedly see gold as both old-fashioned and tacky. The modern preference in expensive metals is for platinum, often known as "white gold" in Chinese. In India, shoppers may sometimes ask for a gold-colored phone, but are said to veer away from the iPhone mostly because of cost, not color options. Apple is expected to address price complaints with the iPhone 5C. That phone will use a plastic back, available in several different colors, and may keep many of the same internals as the iPhone 5. It's the flagship iPhone 5S that will allegedly get gold tinting as an option; other improvements should include a faster processor, a better camera with a dual-LED flash, and a built-in fingerprint sensor.
