iOS App of the Week: Asphalt 8: Airborne

| Earlier this week Gameloft released the next title in its series of arcade racing games, Asphalt 8: Airborne. Featuring 47 full licensed high-performance cars, such as the Lamborghini Veneno, Bugatti Veyron, and Ferrari FXX, Asphalt 8 gives players the ability to race through exotic locations at breakneck speeds. The game makes no attempts to brand itself as a simulation, and instead encourages players to take part in huge jumps, takedowns, nitro boosts and wild drifts.
During races players can build up their adrenaline meter by performing stunts and generally driving dangerously. This built-up power can then be used in small bursts as nitrous boosts, or stored up to unleash a full adrenaline boost that can quickly propel a player from the back of the pack to the front.
Unlike some other popular racing games, Asphalt doesn't pester users to purchase additional items in the game to progress. However, this doesn't mean that in-app purchases are forgone altogether. Players can still spend real money in game to advance more quickly, but it is far from necessary as most players should be able to progress naturally through the game's Career mode.
On top of all the single player events, Asphalt 8 also includes both real-time and asynchronous multiplayer competitions. Players can link up with up to eight opponents and simultaneously compete on any of the games tracks. Alternatively, players can race solo and then challenge a friend to beat their best time. Leaderboards also give players another way to compare themselves against other racers around the world.
Asphalt 8: Airborne is available in the App Store for $1 and weighs in at 884MB. Supported devices include the iPhone 4 or later, 4th gen iPod touch or later, iPad 2 or later, and iPad mini.
