iPhone 5s supplies to be extremely limited for Sept. 20, sources say
Tuesday, September 17, 2013 @ 3:40pm

Retail supplies of the iPhone 5s will be extremely narrow on September 20, sources at several Apple Stores say. The sources claim that of the iPhones being shipped in for launch day, about 70 to 80 percent of units will actually be the iPhone 5c. Moreover, roughly three-quarters of the 5s units that do arrive are expected to be "space gray" models, leaving the white/silver and white/gold options scarce.

Apple is further skewing stock in favor of AT&T over Verizon, and 16 and 32GB capacities instead of 64GB. Because supplies will be so restricted, Apple is said to be preparing an update of the Apple Store iPhone app which will let people check if a particular iPhone configuration is available locally. That update could arrive as soon as next week. The sources' information may back speculation that the lack of iPhone 5s preorders is related to few units being ready in the first place. Had Apple opened up preorders, most 5s units might have already been spoken for, leaving retail shoppers empty-handed and frustrated with the company.
