Apple adds new iPhone tutorial pages covering iOS 7
Wednesday, October 16, 2013 @ 4:10pm

Apple has devised a clever "carousel" mechanism on its revamped iPhone tutorial pages that lets users and those interested in buying an iPhone for the first time learn more about the operating system and basic functions (such as calling or turning on or off certain functions) in a style that's reminiscent of and friendly to touch access, even when viewed on a Mac. Each basic topic can branch off into more specific related tips, with images showing the procedures step-by-step.

In contrast to the company's previous text-heavy and list-oriented approach to helping users find the right KnowledgeBase article, the new approach utilizes iOS 7's motifs and emphasis on visuals. The section on Mail, for example, starts with rudimentary instructions on how to add an existing email account to the program, along with a link to a detailed article on how to find the various credentials and information a user's provider might require. Below the short tutorial, other topics -- including saving a draft, searching mail, recover a deleted mail and creating or managing mailboxes -- appear below the first tutorial and lead to their own pages with visual, step-by-step instructions. The redesign is only available for "iPhone Basics" at present, but could expand to cover iPad and Mac topics -- perhaps after the iPad is refreshed and OS X Mavericks is formally debuted for the Mac.
