Consumer Google Fiber installs begin in Provo, Utah
Tuesday, November 12, 2013 @ 5:33pm

According to a tweet from the official Google Fiber account, installations of the Gigabit Internet service have commenced in Provo, Utah. Google's deal with the city allowed the search engine to purchase an existing city-wide fiber-optic network for one dollar, with the proviso that it maintain and upgrade the nearly decade-old network.

Users can opt for free 5Mbps download with 1Mbps upload for seven years, or Gigabit Internet at 1Gbps download and upload for $70 per month, or be provided with television over fiber for $50 per month over the Gigabit tier and up depending on channel package selected. Each plan will require a one-time $30 buildout fee. The previous "free" tier in Kansas City required a one-time fee of $300, but Kansas City was a new fiber buildout, not the improvement of an older one. Provo taxpayers are still on the hook for a $39 million bond that the city issued to build the network in the first place. The city still owes $3.3 million (including interest per year for 12 years), in addition to $722,000 in equipment to allow the government to continue using the gigabit service for services like traffic lights, police services, and educational institution Internet access.
