Beyond Midnight Software, creators of Days To Go, a previous Product of the Day, has created another useful utility with EjectDisk, an application/extension combination. EjectDisk allows you to quickly eject any disk (CD included) from your Mac using a simple key combination.
After installation, you merely open the EjectDisk
application (best kept in the Control Panels folder, for quick reference), and
set any key combinations to eject all types of disks, including floppies, CDs,
and removables (such as Zip). Once you have completed this you can eject any disk by using the preset key combination. EjectDisk is better than the traditional Finder eject methods in two ways. First, you don't need to be in the Finder to eject the disks. You can press these key combinations in any application and they will take effect. Second, you don't need to select the disk.
Another less noted, but perhaps more useful feature of EjectDisk is the option to have it eject any CD at shutdown. I often forget to eject my CDs and have to restart my computer to get them back. EjectDisk has saved plenty of time and exasperation with that feature alone, although you might find yourself having to manually close the CD tray afterwards by pushing it in.
Users of older versions of EjectDisk should note the changes for version 3.0. A revised interface allows for more than just three keys for ejecting. The additional keys are used for additional CD-ROM or removable drives. You can set a command to eject the first CD, or the second etc. This will allow users to choose which disc is being ejected if they have more than one type of drive.
Beyond Midnight Software has another winner. EjectDisk adds functions that should already be in the MacOS, and it is extremely useful and easy to use. -PK
