DP Autochanger
Download (160k)
Pros: simple and effective
Cons: doesn't scan sub-folders
DP Autochanger is a Script Application that will automatically change your desktop picture at a specified interval. When you first load DP Autochanger, you will be presented with various questions including which folder it should randomly select the desktop pictures from, the placement, and how often the desktop picture should be changed.
Because it is a Script Application, DP Autochanger essentially loads up the Desktop Pictures or Appearance control panel (depending on whether you are running 8 or 8.5, respectively), selects the picture at random, and then places it on the desktop. Naturally, it works faster if you keep the Desktop Pictures or Appearance control panel open (DP Autochanger will ask you if you want it to do this). Under 8.5, a bug exists where if the Appearance control panel is opened and closed multiple times you'll begin to experience problems, so keeping it open at all times is recommended. Unfortunately, this boosts DP Autochanger's RAM usage up to 2 MB (.5 MB for itself, and 1.5 MB for the Appearance control panel) which may be too much for some users to sacrifice.
Also, DP Autochanger will only search for desktop pictures in the root directory of the folder you selected, which means that under 8.5, where the desktop pictures are contained in various folders, you'll either have to manually merge all them into one or have DP Autochanger only use one of them.
Despite being unable to scan subdirectories, DP Autochanger is otherwise a well written application whose functionality you will only fully appreciate once it is installed. And at $5, it's very reasonably priced. -MS
